The Oddity of the Names of the
Week Days
The names of the days of the week are derived from pagan mythology
which dedicate each of the days of the week to a god or goddess.
1st. Sunday - The day of the sun
2nd. Monday - Moonday was sacred to the moon
goddess.
3rd. Tuesday - The day of Tiw, from Mars the god of war.
4th. Wednesday - Woden's day, the furious
god
5th Thursday - Thor's day, the god of thunder.
6th Friday - Venus's day the goddess of spring and beauty.
7th Saturday - Saturn's day, the Roman god of agriculture
In the Bible, six of the days are only referred to by number,
not by name. For instance, (1st day) "Now when Jesus was
risen, early the first day of the week..." Mark 16,9; (2nd
day) "And the evening and the morning were the second day.
Genesis 1:8; (3rd day)"...and the third day he shall rise
again." Mark 10:34; (4th day) "And the evening and
the morning were the fourth day." Genesis 1:19; (5th day)
"And the evening and the morning were the fifth day."
(6th day) Genesis 1:23; "...And the evening and the morning
were the sixth day." Genesis 1:31.
The only day of the week in the Bible that has a name is the
seventh day. It is called the Sabbath and is so named in the
Ten Commandments. It is also the only day that God specifically
blessed and hallowed. We read in Exodus 20:11, "for in
six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that
in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed
the sabbath day, and hallowed it."
Webster's New Twentieth Century Dictionary states under the
word Sabbath, "1. the day set apart in the fourth commandment
of the decalogue to be observed as a day of rest from all secular
labor or employment. This was originally the seventh day of the
week (Saturday), as the day on which God rested from the work
of creation; and this day is still observed by the Jew and some
Christians as the Sabbath."
